Calvin Wight new Junior Head Coach

We're excited to announce that Calvin Whit has accepted to position as the Junior Head coach as we move into the 2018/19 season. Calvin has been a JHSC Nordic Development coach and has worked with the Wilson Winter Sports program for the past two seasons. Calvin's experience as educator outside of JHSC includes coaching for the Central Maine Ski Club, guiding fly fishing trips for Wilderness Ventures, and as a Nordic Guide in GTNP. For a complete bio on Calvin check out his Junior Head Coach Bio.

Coach Calvin Wight

We'd like to acknowledge departing Junior Head Coach Johnny Springer and thank him for his service to JHSC Nordic's parents and athletes. In Johnny's four years as Head Coach, Johnny played a major role in growing the Junior team to the numbers we have today. Many of Johnny's athletes have graduated onto the Comp team, many of whom are on track to logging 500 hours or training this year. Thanks to Johnny and his efforts, JHSC Nordic's pipeline is proving to succeed. All the coaches and staff wish Johnny well on his new adventures.

Development/Junior Update

Summer training wrap up

With school just around the corner, the Development and Junior team summer dry-land sessions will take a fall hiatus until training resumes again in October and November. Thanks to coaches Sevi Hagen and Rob Murphy for keeping the dream alive throughout the summer months.

Fall Dry-Land Information

Development athletes will start dry-land training in mid November this year with the intention of tuning up their physical fitness and building a strong team dynamic. Fall training will commence for the Junior team the last week of October after fall sports are finished. A fundamental movement assessment will set the foundation for motor skill and neuromuscular development before we lay on any sort of training load. Stay tuned for more details from Development Head Coach Rob Murphy and Junior Head Coach Calvin Whit.

Prep/Comp Fall Training Period

As the summer training session for Prep and Comp concludes, some athletes will transition into their respective fall sport while others will balance their fall sport with nordic fall-dryland. Some will continue with a full fledged Nordic dry-land training plan. We encourage cross training and see the value in athletes participating in other sports and activities. By the end of their career at JHSC, for the athletes that reach the fifth phase of development and see Nordic skiing as their primary sport, we encourage at least staying in touch with Nordic specific training throughout the year.

Haig Glacier Camp

The Haig Glacier base camp was created for the Canadian National team after the Calgary Olympics as a high altitude on snow summer training venue. Over the years Canadian and U.S. junior athletes have had the opportunity to experience this unparalleled training opportunity during the warmest months of the year. In combination with the Sun Valley crew, JHSC athletes David King, Jack Love, Josh Roubin, and Des Concannon not only had the opportunity to train with their top competitors, but played a part in raising the bar of what JHSC, Intermountain and National level junior athletes are capable of attaining. It takes a tremendous amount of focus and awareness to balance a 30 hour weekly training plan, not to mention the stress of immediately jumping back into on snow training after spending an entire summer of roller-skiing and other dry-land activities. Knowing your training zones and sticking to those zones, being aware of your nutritional habits, and cognizant of rest and recovery are all components that are required of a mature athlete to thrive at such a camp. See coach Scott Lacy's special follow up e mail to the athletes below and his blog post on the Intermountain website.

"What a great camp!  Exhausting and fulfilling and adventure-full and more.  I am really impressed with the commitment shown in the last year building up to the camp for all of our athletes.  It is a privilege to go up there and I think we earned it and beyond.  All of you put forth amazing energy, ethic, attitude and determination while up there.  Multiple people commented to me how great our team is to work with and how we set an example for other teams to follow.  But stay humble.

The training gains made will be harder to see right away as we jump straight back into dry-land, but remember the long term planning and effort Nordic takes.  And YES! You all made immediate improvements as well, lets make sure we carry those into the rest of the pre-season.  And now you know how strong you are when it comes to big volume weeks and putting in long skis knowing the workout isn't over when your skis come off.

As for all the other parts of this camp off-snow, I think it we all agree it was an incredible experience in it's entirety.  Parents, make sure to pry into the many stories there are to tell.  Athletes, make sure to share the adventure with everyone.

Here is the link to the photos I took, there are some true gems."

Summer Commitment Scholarship

Congratulations to David King for logging 76 training sessions, Bridger Stiles for 70 sessions, and Des Concannon for 66 sessions! The rest of the team also displayed a unprecedented level of commitment to raising their level of fitness and technique during the off season months. The coaches couldn't be more proud. Each athlete will receive $1000 towards their program and travel fees.
