Freeride Scholarship

Two Scholarship Awards, One Great Program:

The Freeride Program is excited to build an endowed scholarship fund to support the future of Freeskiing and Snowboarding in our community. The families of Tiernan Schuldt and Bryce Newcomb, two Freeriders who passed before their time, have come forward to support us in this mission, and to keep the memory of their loved ones alive into the future.

Tiernan Schuldt Memorial Scholarship: 

Introduction:

JHSC Freeride is excited to build a snowboard specific endowed scholarship, in memory of Tiernan Schuldt, a long-time member of our snowboard program. Tiernan was a strong rider, and win or lose, had an incredible love for snowboarding. This scholarship will keep Tiernan’s spirit alive through sharing the joy of snowboarding with future generations of snowboard athletes.

About Tiernan:

Tiernan was an incredibly talented snowboarder and longtime member of the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Freeride team. There wasn’t a cliff, rock, or tree that Tiernan couldn’t turn into a magic trick. Watching him ride and perform stunts most can only dream of was pure joy. His board was an extension of his feet, and the effortless way he rode and competed regularly kept him ranked as one of the top snowboarders in the country. Tiernan thrived under pressure and competed in both USASA freestyle events and IFSA freeride events. He rode fast and jumped high. He had one speed, didn’t know how to hold back, and was always pushing himself. Most of all, in the midst of training and competing, Tiernan would always find a way to keep it fun and light hearted. Tiernan passed away in 2024, when he was a senior concurrently enrolled at Summit Innovations School and Jackson Hole High School.

Application Criteria:

In order to qualify for this scholarship, applicants need to:

• Be registered for JHSC snowboard programs 

• Create a 90 second snowboarding edit.

  • Bonus points for creativity and FUN.

  • Edits must be age appropriate (Clean music choices!)

• Write a 100 word description of their video and why they LOVE snowboarding/freeride.

Preference given to athletes who demonstrate financial need.

Application Deadline:

The deadline for applications is November 24th, 2025. Videos can be uploaded in the application form below.

Selection and Disbursement:

Award recipients will be selected by the Tiernan Schuldt Scholarship Committee by Dec. 8th, 2025. Disbursement will be in the form of credit to JHSC accounts. These credits can be used to cover tuition, travel, competition fees, and more.

Bryce Newcomb Memorial Scholarship:

Introduction:

Bryce Newcomb was a long-time member of our Freeride community. As a coach, judge and athlete, Bryce brought fun and energy to everything he did. This scholarship will keep Bryce’s memory alive through sharing the joy of skiing with future generations of athletes.

About Bryce:

Bryce was a passionate and talented skier. He pushed the envelope of the sport and his skiing resume was beyond impressive. More than just an athlete, Bryce gave back to the community as a coach and judge for JHSC Freeride. Skiing was his passion, and his energy for the sport was contagious. Bryce exemplified our core value of FUN in everything he did. Bryce passed away in 2018 in a cornice failure on Cody Peak. Bryce's memory will live in perpetuity with each award recipient whose aspirations are supported through scholarship. 

Application Criteria:

In order to qualify for this scholarship, applicants need to:

• Be registered for JHSC Freeride Ski Programs 

• Create a 90 second Ski edit (vertical format for use on social media)

  • Bonus points for creativity and FUN.

  • Edits must be age appropriate (Clean music choices!)

• Write a 100 word description of their video and why they LOVE Freeride.

Preference given to athletes who demonstrate financial need.
