Freeride Program Update: January 2024
Wow, a month of training has already flown by! I hope everybody had a wonderful Holiday season spent with Friends and Family. While the snowpack may be low (67% of average to be exact), Freeride has been making the most of each and every day on snow. Below is a recap of some of our club and Freeride events from the past month, followed by a look ahead to upcoming events for the month of January. Keep doing those snow dances, Mother Nature needs a little extra convincing this year!
First Day on Snow Sat. Dec. 9th
Despite a delayed start, everybody was fired up and ready to go for our first day of practice! Since then we’ve had great participation from all age groups and some new tricks already in the bag for the season!
Black Tie Blue Jeans Ski Ball
Thanks to all who came out and supported the JHSC through the Black Tie Blue Jeans ski ball. This is a very important event that makes everything we do here at the ski club possible. The Freeride delegation consisted of Toby Koekkoek, Stefan Merriam, Matt Newton and myself.
USSS 200
Head Ski Coach, Matt Newton, and myself recently completed a USSS Freeski 200 course in Park City, Utah. We spent 2 days on snow with coaches from around the country exchanging ideas and best practice of movement analysis, training schedules, competition schedules and much more. Matt and I are very excited to share the information learned with the rest of our coaching staff and athletes.
Winter Carnival
Our first annual Winter Carnival took place on Friday, Dec. 22nd. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for scholarships. Each discipline set up their own course with Nordic skiers on the tube hill, Alpine on a race course, and freeride in the mini-jib park. Freeride raised over $600 and had great participation. This event will come back bigger and better for next year!
Parent/Coaches Ski Day
We had our first parent/coaches ski meetup on Dec. 23rd. It was a great opportunity for parents to get to know the coaching staff better. Keep your eyes open for another parent/coach ski day coming in the spring once competition season has slowed down a bit!

1/5 - 1/7 : USASA home event
We’ll be hosting our home USASA event Jan 5-7. This is a great opportunity to come out and check out the disciplines of Slopestyle and Rail Jam. Spectators will need lift tickets, there is no foot access to the slope course in the Bronco Park.
1/11-1/15: Travel Season Begins!
Travel season starts off with a double header!
Matt Newton and Toby Koekkoek will be taking a group to Kicking Horse in Golden, BC for our first IFSA National event of the season.
Max Wilbrecht and myself will be leading a trip to Whitefish, MT for our first IFSA Regional event of the season.
MLK Weekend 1/13-1/14:
* For those not traveling for competition, we will be offering training for Progression, Progression +, and Competition teams at SK.
