May Recap

What a May it’s been! For a while there, it seemed winter was never going to end. Luckily we enjoyed a few nice days to remind us the seasons are changing and summer is on its way! May is one of the more quiet months for the Freeride season, with many of our staff taking personal time to get out and push themselves in the mountains. From Alaska to Switerland and everywhere in between, the Freeride coaching staff took full advantage of the spring skiing to do what we love the most, ski! Now it's time to buckle down and prepare for the winter season ahead!

Kilmain family - “First Family of S&S Coulior.”

As many of you know, Jack (student-athlete) and Morgan (former athlete, current coach) Kilmain have been making waves in the ski world. They recently became the first brother sister duo to send what we all know to be the burliest in-bounds line in Jackson, S&S Coulior. Morgan became the first female to ever ski the wall!

Big shouts out to Jack and Morgan for being staples on our team and in our community!

End of Season Awards

On Friday, May 3rd, Freeride had its annual end of season awards party. This is an excellent opportunity to celebrate another great season, and honor some stand out athletes who went above and beyond. Our first set of awards mirror the JHSC core value of Fun, Commitment, Teamwork, Sportsmanship and Competition. These values define the club and our mission to create champions in sport and life.

Winning these awards were:

Fun - Noah Hilke

Commitment - Violet Kastor

Sportsmanship - Renny Roberts

Teamwork - Liam Thompson

Competition - Ace Emery

Our next set of awards is specific to Freeride.

Minor Threat:  This award is given to a younger athlete in Freeride that the coaches staff sees as having huge potential for the future.

Congrats to: Will Lynch and Sally Decker

Top Ski Athlete:  Given out to an outstanding male and female skier each season, this award honors the top performing ski athlete of the season.

Congrats to:  Jack Kilmain and Lyvi Ulmer

Top Snowboard Athlete: Given out to an outstanding male and female snowboarder each season, this award honors the top performing snowboard athlete of the season.

Congrats to:  Noah Robertson and Ivy Swain

Tony Siebert - Pardee On:  Tony Siebert was a coach and friend of Freeride who passed away in an Avalanche on East Vail pass in 2014. He was well known for his playful approach while skiing the whole mountain at a very high level. This award honors a male and female athlete who embody his spirit.

Congrats to: Owen Strand and Ivy Swain

Aspen Camp:

Over Memorial Day weekend, a few athletes from the Comp Team went down to Aspen to train on airbags and trampolines. Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club (AVSC) was gracious to let us use their private facilities. Aspen is one of the few places in America with an airbag big enough for double flips. Our athletes took advantage of the opportunity and progressed their skills. Airbags are awesome training tools and are one of the safest methods to learn new tricks.  In the future, we plan on expanding our spring camp and airbag training options to allow our athletes the best and safest ways to progress their skills.”   - Head Coach Matt Newton
