Backcountry December Newsletter
The 4-Month Backcountry Team has officially begun!
December is typically a preparation month for our team. We focus on making sure all equipment is dialed, learning the fundamentals of avalanche rescue, breaking down how to read and use the avalanche forecast, and—just as importantly—getting to know our fellow teammates.
The slow start to winter has meant we haven’t yet been able to get on skis at Snow King Mountain to practice technical ski touring skills. While there has been enough snow for groomer skiing, our program relies on the uphill route through the forest, where snowmaking does not occur. With the forest floor mostly dry, we’ve been logging plenty of uphill workouts on foot instead. Spirits have been high, and we’re excited to finally get on skis this week!
January is when the program really gets into full swing. Our team will begin weekend ski touring days in Grand Teton National Park in partnership with Exum Guides, complete an avalanche course on Teton Pass with the American Avalanche Institute, and wrap up the month with a backcountry hut trip to Downing Mountain Lodge in Hamilton, Montana.
In February, our youngest group—the Mini Mountaineers (ages 10–12)—will kick off. This group is always a highlight, and it’s inspiring to see kids so young excited about hiking uphill, skiing in the backcountry, and learning avalanche safety skills. We’ll wrap up the season by the end of March.
Stay tuned for future newsletters with photos and stories from our backcountry adventures.
Happy New Year!
