Prep/Comp Update
JHSC Nordic's most competitive team in the program has been hard at work all fall and since May! October had some lovely weather and we were training in T-shirts until the end of the month. One highlight of October for Prep/Comp was our trip to the Schutzenski Festival at Soldier Hollow in mid-October. The athletes got the chance to mix things up with some of the best skiers in the country and the world, with Kevin Bolger and Jessie Diggins in attendance. Seeing JHSC athletes in the same heats as World Cup skiers was pretty inspiring. JHSC athletes earned some Junior Division honors as well, with Nate Streubel winning the Junior Classic sprint heats on Sunday and Lena Poduska winning the 6k skate race on Saturday! All of the athletes who attended had great races and were feeling some big Nordic energy! This will definitely be on our list for falls to come.
Another highlight of the last month has been our testing day with Kilter Physical Therapy. Kilter took our athletes in for a running analysis and force-plate test to screen the team for both systematic problems amongst the team and any particular individual issues. We were able to have some great feedback about our power and force production that we will take forward into the rest of the season! Huge thank you to the folks at Kilter PT for helping keep our kids injury-free!
Junior Fall Training
The Junior Team has also been training hard this Fall! The team got a set of 20 pairs of skate rollerskis that they have been using for the last month, and the athletes have all progressed extremely quickly. Athletes are working on balance, technique, agility, cardio, and hand eye coordination so they can be ready for the winter! Some days the parking lot has been full with 40 rollerskiers from Junior, Prep, and Comp! The athletes have also had a great time at Halloween, bringing tons of cheer and spirit. Watch out for the JHSC Nordic Juniors this fall—Coach Johnny Springer has said they are "animals"! It looks like they are definitely good at dressing up for Halloween...
Trail Creek Cleanup
The turning of the seasons means that it is time to get out to Trail Creek and prepare for the coming winter! Trail Creek Nordic Center is a community space and it takes the help of the entire community to help keep it up! This year the project list included gathering deadfall and wood from the forest to burn to reduce wildfire risk, organizing lease fleet equipment, raising the gas tank for the Prinoth, cutting and stacking firewood, trimming back the aspens in the East Fields, and mowing grass on Forest Service land. All of the tasks were completed with aplomb and we are getting very close to being ready for the Winter! With the recent snow we are on the cusp of an extremely early opening for Trail Creek. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to pitch in!
