Settling in for the Winter!

Old number 20 showed up with a new bull calf just beyond the cabin this morning; things around Trail Creek definitely indicate that we are moving into winter with our resident moose starting to show up.  Other winter arrivals include a couple of deer and even the recent resident elk herd trampled through a couple of nights ago.

One thing you might notice if you are lucky enough to make it out for a Nordic ski is that the resident population of squirrels seems to be extra abundant this winter.  Sightings of dozens have not been uncommon during recent grooming sessions as they take advantage of the warmer weather to lay in their winter’s food supply.

Today’s grooming was multiple passes of the Ginzu Groomer on pretty much every trail that has been groomed lately.  Overnight the rain turned to graupel with numerous squalls continuing throughout the morning.  Total accumulation is moving into the over an inch range.

The bases have settled considerably with the recent warm weather, sidelining the Pisten Bully until the next major storm cycle.  Classic tracks will be weak for the time being, but remember it is very early season, watch for obstacles, and you should still be able to have some fun skiing.

Groomer’s choice for today is Homesite.
