April Alpine Newsletter

Lucy Wirth, Taylor Moe, and Dylan Witherite before their runs in the Jackson Hole Downhill

The JHSC Alpine team has been extremely busy in the last months of the winter season: athletes and coaches are off at Championship events and Spring Series races to lower points! The Race Department held their last event of the season, the Western Region U14 Champs at JHMR, and we had phenomenal weather for one of the Club’s biggest fundraisers, The Jackson Hole Downhill. Thanks to everyone who participated and made the event a success.

U10 & U12: IMD Champs at Snowbird

We had many athletes from the U10 and U12 crews attend IMD Champs in Snowbird over the March 18-19 weekend. The Faris sisters, Phoebe and Daisy, both had an outstanding weekend, as did many others from Jackson! It is always such a fun event with each team having parents run tents at the finish line to provide nourishment and hometown support! It was a great way to wrap the season for these teams.

U14: WR Champs at JHMR, Tri-Divisionals at Targhee, and Whistler Cup (Taryn Moe)

The U14 squad was split during much of this month, with Taryn Moe, Ruby Hoelscher, Charlie Lighthart, Charlie Ryan, Ashton Ritter, and Jack McNamara all attending U14 WR Champs at JHMR and more than half the team qualifying for Tri-Divisionals at Grand Targhee! Mother Nature made it challenging with soft snow, but the kids did amazing job! Taryn Moe qualified for Whistler Cup in Canada, which is a truly prestigious event that most only dream of attending! Congrats to all!

U16: U16 WR Champs at Sun Valley, ID & U16 Nationals at Mission Ridge, WA

Coaches Ned and Vidar had a strong group of U16s this season! 8 out of the 14 athletes qualified for Regionals at Sun Valley: Lucy Wirth, Taylor Moe, Dylan Witherite, Oliver Sanders, Joey McNamara, Liam Logan, Teddy Peightal, and Jaden D’Amours! Five of those athletes are moving on to U16 Nationals at Mission Ridge, Washington from their results at Regionals: congrats Lucy, Taylor, Liam, Jaden, and Oliver for qualifying for Nationals. Good luck!

FIS: U18 Nationals at Mittersill, NH & US Nationals at Sun Valley, ID

Our JHSC FIS athletes are having a great season so far and still have a few race series to attend! Coach Kevin Keane took Avery MacMillan, Mattias Wilson, and Atticus Sanders to his home state to race at Mittersill, New Hampshire, for U18 Nationals!

Mattias Wilson qualified for US Nationals at Sun Valley as a first year FIS athlete, which is no small feat! He was 9th in the Downhill and 1st in both Super G and Downhill among YOB 2006 athletes!

Many others have had standout results and are getting their points down to personal bests!

End-of-Season Celebrations

U10s celebrating at Snow King

Parties: Each team will have an end-of-season party and awards ceremony to close out the 22-23 season! Thank you all who have already attended the younger athletes’ program dinners! Rockchuck, 2-Day, U10s and the Masters have officially closed the door to the 22-23 race season. Thank you to all the athletes, coaches, and parents for making the season such a success!

Reminders:

  1. The end of the season, moving into Spring is a great time to think about ordering gear for the 23-24 season! As many of you know, come fall, companies have low inventory. Please reach out to coaches about getting orders in soon to guarantee sizing and gear you desire.
  2. Make sure to tune your skis before you toss them in a corner of the garage! You will be thankful you did come Fall. It really is important to keep your gear in top shape, and it is especially important to store your skis with wax on them!

Thank you to ALL Volunteers!

We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who volunteered this season. Volunteering is essential for our Alpine program to ensure that we can host quality home events for our athletes! We had so many dedicated individuals who stepped up and worked countless hours.
THANK YOU!!!!

OFF SEASON CAMPS

2023 Spring & Summer Race Camps

Snowbird Spring Camps

Snowbird Spring Camp training venue

With a record amount of snowfall for the 22-23 season, Snowbird will be open for the weekends well into the summer! The U14s, U16s, and FIS athletes will take advantage of Snowbird’s deep snow pack and high elevation this coming spring for 2 long-weekend trips.

The first session will be three days of GS training and fundamentals, and the second weekend will be three days of slalom training and fundamentals.

May 12-14 : Session 1 : Friday, Saturday, Sunday (GS)

May 19-21 : Session 2 : Friday, Saturday, Sunday (SL)

Vehicles will head down to Snowbird on Thursday after school for each session, which means kids will only miss two Fridays of school (and one is a TCSD FLEX Friday).

The spring camps are always tons of fun and very productive! Athletes have no pressure to perform anytime soon, so they are able to put 110% into improving their technical and tactical focuses and possibly try something new. Cost: TBD very soon – Still waiting for pricing on a package deal for lodging, lanes and tickets! Visit the Alpine Program Summer Camps page for more info.

2023 Mt. Hood Summer Camps

JHSC Alpine is offering two options for U10 & U12 athletes to join a day-camp style summer camp! Athletes will stay with parents and be transported to and from activities. On-hill training will be from 8-12 daily, and there will be a dryland activity in the afternoon. Mt. Hood is an incredibly beautiful area with great mountain biking, hiking, swimming spots, fruit stands, lavender fields, and so much more! It is not only fun for the kids, but for the parents, too, who seem to find plenty to do in this beautiful area.

For U14 & U16 athletes, we are offering 2 consecutive weeks so that athletes who are interested in joining for 2 weeks can do so on one long trip. These camps include lodging with the team, food, lanes, transportation, tickets and coach expenses. We will find a fun local activity to take part in on our day off mid camp!
