Martin Hagen’s competitive career spanned 21 years, fifteen of which were at an international level with the US Biathlon Team. Born and raised in Jackson hole, Hagen’s career started with the Jackson Hole Ski Club. In 1973, he qualified for the first-ever US Junior Biathlon Team and competed at the World Championships in Lake Placid, New York. The same year, Hagen became the first US Junior Biathlon Champion. Throughout his dominant national career, Hagen remained grounded by his humble demeanor and quiet fortitude. Hagen earned his place on seven World Championships teams and competed in three Winter Olympics; the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, and the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. In 1978, Hagen won the coveted Sven Johanson Award, which is given to the top US biathlete. His astounding accomplishments are a credit to his natural talent, persistence, and drive. Hagen continues his love of sport capturing the athlete’s essence as an artist.
