Pioneer, Innovator
Harry Baxter dedicated his life to advancing the ski industry through marketing, instruction, and adaption. After extremely successful stints at Mt. Whittier and Sugarloaf, Baxter accepted the position of Director of Marketing and Vice President of Public Relations at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in 1974. Until his retirement in 1995, Baxter’s dedication and creativity helped make JHMR the world-renowned resort it is today. In an effort to increase enjoyment, awareness, and access to the sport of skiing, Baxter launched popular events such as JHSC’s Pole Pedal Paddle, Powder Eight, and the Wild West Classic World Cup. As one of the first people to adapt skiing for the blind and establish programs for injured war veterans, Baxter brought skiing to anyone willing to try, sharing his passion with generations. Following retirement, Baxter coached for the Jackson Hole High School Team. His countless contributions to the ski industry earned him the prestigious US Recreation Ski Sport Pioneer award, as well as the BEWI award, among many others. Today, Harry Baxter lives in Jackson Hole where he is still an avid skier and biker.
