We offer our Comp Team to highly motivated athletes aged 15 and over. Our goal is advancing each individual’s skiing and racing skills to maximize their athletic potential, and to help build the discipline, drive, and determination for them to succeed in whatever arena they choose after ski racing. These athletes have the opportunity to attend several summer training camps (on and off snow). Team training begins at the beginning of June with dryland work and continues until the snow falls. Daily training focuses on details of technique, endurance work, strength work, and speed work. Training is partially based on the individual needs determined from physical testing, competition records, and personal goals. The Comp Team athletes participate in local, regional, and national U.S. Ski & Snowboard races, and Wyoming High School races. They have the opportunity to qualify for the Junior Nationals, Nordic Nations Cup in Scandinavia, and World Juniors. The physical and mental demands of the sport give a tangible reality to the concept of working and improving. Competition, training, and the motivator of personal improvement instill the principles of teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, time management, and commitment. These are lessons kids take away and keep for the rest of their lives. Comp team athletes are encouraged to register for the full-time year-round option at registration. Even though they may be involved in other seasonal sports, the JHSC Nordic coaching staff works with and is in communication with athletes on a weekly to monthly basis. Athlete to Coach Ratio: 5:1

Comp team athletes follow and begin to understand period based training. The periods are broken down into a balanced yearly, monthly, and weekly training schedule. The overall yearly plan for these athletes equates to about 450 hours. However, as athletes are involved in other sports, take time for family vacation, and are involved in other activities, the plan is dynamic and can be modified to each individual’s needs. Some athletes are involved in other sports, others focus on Nordic training year-round. Coaches pay attention to each athlete’s goals inside and outside of Nordic racing and training. This plays a factor in how we design their individual training plan while still adhering to the overarching plan of the team’s periodized plan. There is an increase in volume training, but we still emphasize speed, agility, technique, and strength given that we primarily race and train at altitude. While volume training becomes more important at the Prep and Comp team level, there is currently a larger national discussion about the importance of emphasizing speed, agility, and overall athleticism on skis. Comp Team athletes have the opportunity and are supported to participate in the highest levels of competition available to Juniors in the US. For some, the top level of the development staircase might be a National Team, an NCAA championship, or a spot on a top college squad. Everyone who makes the climb walks through the door at the top with fitness, confidence, self-motivation, patience, and an appreciation for hard work.

Camps
Bend On Snow Camp - May
We travel to Bend in mid-May to take advantage of the last snow of the year. This camp is open to all Prep and Comp athletes, but is most appropriate for athletes over 14. We ski every morning at Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center then do dryland training at low elevation near Bend and Sunriver. This is the Cascades at their very best! We also surf in Pacific City on the Oregon Coast for a day to take a break from the mountains and get a different kind of training in! This is a great way to kick off the training season with some easy volume work and get some good skiing in! We generally get 24-30 hours of training in for this 10 day camp.
Utah Desert & Schutzenski Festival - October
This is a dryland camp in Utah, where we will spend some time in Southern Utah and Park City, UT. We will go running, rollerskiing, hiking, mountain biking, and enjoy the desert weather while it gets colder in the Tetons! This camp is focused on intensity and long workouts, and with a full summer of training under your belts this camp is more difficult. We will both do some easy distance training in the desert near St. George and go to the rollerski races at the Schutzenski Festival in Park City, where the whole US Ski Team is there racing.
Turpin Meadows November
Thanksgiving Camp is a great opportunity to get a big jump on the season. Training will consist of technique work, video review, over-distance workouts, long tours, breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, yoga, nutrition talks, mental training skills including focus exercises, goal setting, and positive self-talk. We will have a busy schedule but as some of the older athletes can attest we will be having a lot of fun too! We stay at Turpin Meadows and have the entire place to ourselves, complete with a chef and nice accommodations so everyone can maximize nutrition, training and recovery.
