November Alpine Newsletter
Alpine Team Updates:
FIS:
After much anticipation and hard work in the gym the FIS team is preparing to head to Winter Park, CO for early season training. Our Fall gym sessions have been highly productive training muscle endurance, balance, agility and maintaining the strength athletes worked hard to develop over the summer. We are excited to have the team together and get back on snow!
Assistant Coach, Matias Sopelana arrived from Argentina at the beginning of the month! He is here on a H2B Visa for 7 months and we are very excited to have him join the FIS coaching staff along with Head Coach Marissa Haase and Part time coach Scotty Veenis! Matias comes from a background in ski instruction and high-level race coaching!
U16:
The U16 Team spent 10 days in Hintertux, Austria in early October for a slalom and giant slalom training camp! For many of the athletes it was their first time to Austria and they very much enjoyed the experience! The whole team has been working hard in the gym, running intervals up Snow King, yoga, and much much more! Coaches Ned, Maci and Teagan have started 1 on 1 meetings with athletes and parents to go over the hopes and expectations of the season!
U14:
The U14 Team will join the U16’s in Panorama for an early season on snow training camp starting next week! They have been joining the U16’s in many circumstances for dryland this fall especially on days when the Air Quality was very poor and all teams had to be inside the lodge room.
U12 & U10:
Both teams are some of the mightiest in the club, with over 40 athletes each! These teams have been hiking, playing games and doing obstacle courses!
2 Day & Rockchuck Racers:
The 2 Day and RC teams have not started the season yet but will have their team meetings this month, we highly recommend families to attend to make sure all questions are answered before the resorts open, and the programs begin!
Why ski in the off-season?
Below is a great article about the importance and how much skiing should be done at each age and developmental phase!

Well-Being Program
This fall the Alpine Program started a Well-Being Program for our U16 and FIS athletes! Over the past few years, we have noticed a real need to give our athletes tools and resources to help with the mental aspect of the sport. We brought in professional speakers who are licensed sports psychologists, nutritionists and physical therapists throughout our 8 week program! I am excited to start normalizing these topics and make athletes more aware of their body and mind!
We had our last night on 10/30 of our Well Being Program with a recap on all the speakers and topics that were covered over the last 2 months. To name a few of the speakers we had Ryan Burke – Sports Psych, Devin Delaney- Nutritionist, Lexie Drechsel MacPhie - PT, Barbara Ann Cochran- Sports Psych(Olympic Gold Medalist & mom of RCS), Kirsten Cooper - Sports Psych for the US Olympic & Para Olympic Committee, and Annie Rendall local licensed counselor and therapist spoke and organized the whole program! We felt the student athletes received information that will help performance and overall life skills!

Work Deposit/Volunteering:
For the majority of parents with kids in JHSC they are responsible for working off a certain number of hours per year. This is dependent on what age and team the athlete is a part of. Signing up to volunteer for JHSC club wide events and competitions we host are the main ways to accomplish the task. It shouldn’t be looked at as a burden that you try to check off and move on. Having a community of parents volunteering at races creates an amazing culture! It takes a village to run a race and without the help of parents and community members it wouldn’t be possible.

Referee Clinic in Jackson Hole – Saturday, November 9
Along the lines of volunteering at races we will be hosting a referee clinic to become a certified referee at races. For coaches this means they can set and ref during and for a race. For parents this means you would be able to sign up with the Start or Finish Referee positions that every race needs! If you are interested in getting involved at a little higher level and basically always having an available job at races get you ref cert completed on Nov 9!
